Suzanne & Bob in England

On March 2, 2005, Suzanne and Bob packed up and moved from Shoreline to Cambridge, England. Bob was offered a geophysics research job at the University of Cambridge, and it was too exciting an opportunity to pass up! It's a 4-year post, so we plan to be here at least that long. Browse on for snapshots of our life here. Note that the newest posts are at the top of the page, so if you want to see things in chronological order, scroll to the bottom and work your way up.

Finally found Biodiesel!

Well, we finally were able to fill up our little Peogeot 106 with B100 biodiesel yesterday. It's been a while since we'd been able to do it. In Seattle, we had access to Dr Dan's Alternative fuel werks for filling up our diesel isuzu Trooper. Here in Cambridge, it was more difficult to find, until 2 local guys, Dan Tomlinson and Mark Neilson, created Cambridge Biodiesel, a co-op club dedicated to providing B100 to the Cambridge area. Way to go guys, and Thanks!

If you've never heard of it before, biodiesel is fuel for diesel engines made from vegetable oil. the oil has to be processed to make it palatable for the injection pumps and injectors on most cars, but some folks are making slight modifications (there are even pre-made kits available- like from www.greasecar.com) to allow their cars to run on straight, unrefined vegetable oil! These folks can go the local fish & chip shop (or, better yet, a chinese restaraunt since the oil is usually cleaner), and fill up, for free!

If you want to know more, take a look at the biofuels pages at Journey to Forever, which has lots of good information, including about how to make biodiesel at home! So far we've made a Small batch in a blender. or you could do a google search. Or go to your local library or book store and pick up a copy of From the Fryer to the Fuel tank, by Josh Tickell, of Veggie Van Fame.

Then get a small diesel car (ours gets 55mpg on any kind of fuel!), and stop supporting the oil industry!

So, for the actual stuff from our life here in England, head over to:

The Annex- Trumpington, Cambridgeshire

The Annex
Originally uploaded by schawley.
This is the house we finally found after about a month of house-hunting. We've now been living here for a month. Looking for furnishings, we've had many weekends spent at "car boot" sales, which are sort of like open flea markets, in which folks will come to a parking lot ('car park'), and open up thier trunk ('boot') to sell things- a little like all the yard sales in town rolled into one parking lot. Kind of fun, but also a little tiring. Ebay (yes, they do have it in England too- take a look at www.ebay.co.uk) has also been a good source of furnishings. One of the main difficulties has been getting things home, because we've decided to try not to have to own a car here. More on that later.

Leaving Shoreline for Cambridge

Quite a hectic time that was, with Bob finishing up his dissertation defense and then us moving only a few days after that. We've been here in Cambridge for about 2 months now, and things are starting to return to "normal" although the definition of normal changes when you move to another country, as we've found...
